Now the 5 series produced from 1997 to 1999 was a little more special. These years saw prominent changes not only to the font used for the numbers, but also with the overall sticker appearance. For instance, codes from 57XXXXX onwards transformed to a cleaner, modern look.

10XXXXXX to 31XXXXXX (2005-2021)

For the longest time, the Chanel code stayed consistent throughout 16 years. From 2005 to 2021, the brand’s sticker format was kept uniform across all Chanel bags and leather goods. 32XXXXXX (2022)

In April 2021, the brand introduced a new way to conceal the Chanel code: RFID microchipped metal plates. However, as the transition took place, other bags and leather goods were still being produced using the existing Chanel code system.

Because of this, the 32XXXXXX codes are considered quite rare and can only be found in select bags and small leather goods (SLGs). One of the possible reasons for this is the lack of space to place the new metal plate.

Meanwhile the Chanel code is used like a date code, documenting when a bag was made, rather than what season or collection it belongs to. This is the primary point of reference for authenticating an item.

2021 Onwards: A New Chanel Authentication Code System

After nearly 40 years in use, the Chanel code system and all its authenticity cards were replaced with the innovative metal plate. Embedded within is an RFID microchip. The chips use NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology, which allows it to share concealed data with other NFC-enabled devices. This is why only boutiques are equipped with the necessary scanners for their items.

Blockchain technology is also used to store product data embedded in the chips. This means it cannot be modified or is not easily editable.

Where to Find the Chanel Microchip?

The microchip is embedded inside a rectangular metal plate. It is attached to the interior bag lining. For WOCs, it is attached inside the zipper pocket. Its edges must be perfectly even and corners very slightly rounded. 

Its characteristics should be one of the main points in the Chanel code check. The metal plate is about 1.2” wide, engraved with the iconic CC logo, as well as an 8-digit alphanumeric code. This code, however, does not follow the same Chanel code system. It was devised to enhance the brand’s efforts against counterfeiting and imitations. 

The plate color usually matches the bag’s hardware. If your bag comes with gold hardware, the metal plate must follow the same color.
